It’s crazy that the first review of B&S Dayshade is over four years old, that we both tried it – and now have changed our opinion on it. Or isn’t it?! Here’s the Beyer & Söhne Dayshade SPF50 update!

Beyer & Söhne, the brand

“This small family-led company with a background in pharmacy came to be in 2011. Their product range is very small and all based on the same philosophy: no filler ingredients, but instead, effective ones. They don’t use mineral oil, parabens, silicones, colouring agents, fragrance and alcohol.”

We have mentioned their products again and again on this blog:

Dayshade is called an “oil-fluid” on B&S’s website. It’s a reddish oil with interesting antioxidants: tocotrienol, a form of Vitamin E; Asthaxantin, a carotenoid (both are excellent for fighting free radicals), and ceramides to strengthen your skin barrier.

It also boasts a very high UVA protection up to 34, UVB up to 61, and modern UV filters: Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (Tinosorb S), Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (Uvinul A Plus), Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone), Ethylhexyl Triazone (Uvinul T 150).

The bottle I am currently using is from last year, and while mine still has the same ingredients list from the one in the review I posted in 2018, the bottle pump already has a new design. The pump was very flimsy before and the new design overcame that for sure.

Also, it might explain why currently the recommended amount for full protection is three pumps (previously it was five).

The current version (March 2022) of Dayshade SPF 50+ on the Beyer & Söhne site has some different ingredients, but the sunscreen actives and key antioxidants remain the same. What is majorly different to me is that they didn’t use palm oil anymore in the new formulation, yes!

What I thought before

I still love the fact that it doesn’t leave a white cast on my darker skin, so I’m not afraid of looking white when I slather on sunscreen. Dayshade doesn’t irritate my skin, doesn’t cause breakouts, and actually makes it look glowing! It also plays well will foundations, especially ones with a powder-like or matte finish like Fenty’s original Pro Filt’r foundation. Here’s the thing, though, that I already mentioned in the original review: Dayshade is much too oily to actually use the recommended amount (although obviously I’d rather be oily than white-casted).

If you’re curious, here is a reel of me testing it out on three pumps. It is very visible with three pumps and has no signs of absorbing after 15 minutes.

how much sunscreen for face

Four years ago, I raved about this because it never, ever has a white cast. Nowadays, though, there’re excellent sunscreens available that also don’t leave a white cast AND are much more user-friendly.

I have an extreme combination skin that leans rather dry in cold winter weather (plus I’m a runner, so I go against the windy and cold weather element a lot). But still, it’s completely impossible for me to use the recommended amount for full protection – my glasses will always slide on my oily nose, for example. The oil will just sit on my skin, never fully absorbing, while my skin feels dry underneath. It also sometimes pills on top of serums.

I still like it as my sun protection when I’m out running on windy days – it really protects my skin from the elements then.

Still, also as a serum that boosts my SPF of the day it’s nice. I can make it work at one pump combined with other sunscreens that could dry the skin like my favorite Anessa one. If I don’t baby it well, however, under a mask it could be a catastrophe, and I can’t help but wonder: where ARE the people claiming that this works well for them as sole protection WITH the recommended amount? And do they look like an oil-slick?

(Updated) Checklist & Rating

Beyer & Söhne Dayshade SPF 50+ Checklist

Their website says that the sunscreen effectiveness is 50% after 20 minutes in the water. I wouldn’t say it’s waterproof, but it’s up to you to decide.
