Haruharu Wonder’s Black Rice Moisture Airyfit Sunscreen has been around the interwebs since last year, and every review I saw praised it to high heaven. And still, it hasn’t really taken off. But I can already tell you: it’s one of the best K-Beauty sunscreens I’ve ever tested. More in my Haruharu Black Rice Airyfit Sunscreen review!

The Brand

Haruharu Black Rice Airyfit Sunscreen review

Haruharu Wonder landed firmly on the skincare enthusiasts’ radars with their fermented rice toner a few years ago. There can also be no doubt that their packaging is pleasingly minimalist in the rhode style of natural colours, and I absolutely don’t understand why people don’t talk more about their absolutely excellent sunscreen.

Their own description is: ‘haruharu wonder is lifestyle clean vegan skincare brand that truly fulfills our day-to-day necessities.’ There’s a concentration on fermented ingredients and a lot of talk about clean, natural, non-toxic etc. which I don’t love, but understand that nowadays, as a brand, you’re more or less obligated to add those utterly meaningless terms to your brand description. Haruharu, btw, means ‘everyday’ in Korean, thus hinting at their aim to make products for your everyday use.

Notable ingredients

First, what’s not included, and that’s fragrance, essential oils or denatured alcohol. There’re, though, a lot of flower extracts – keep in mind if your skin is super sensitive.

Apart from the advertised niacinamide, ceramides, and adenosine (an anti-inflammatory agent that can help with barrier repair) I want to flag three interesting ingredients.

First one is Phytosphingosine which appears in the upper skin layer on its own and as a compound that makes up ceramides which are essential for a functioning skin barrier.

Second is rice bran oil which is first and foremost an moisturizing ingredient. It also has a lot of antioxidants and fatty acids.

And third is Houttuynia Cordata extract, from a plant that is native to Southeast Asia and is used in TCM:

‘The main active components in the plant are these fancy chemicals called flavonoids. Houttuynia cordata specifically has a good amount of polyphenolic flavonoids, four common ones being quercetin, quercitrin, hyperoside, and rutin. All of these exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. Quercitrin has also been shown to decrease damage from UVB rays, which is an added bonus.’

Haruharu Wonder doesn’t disclose the UVA PPF, but I’m impressed by the filter combo. Mexoryl SX and Uvinul A Plus are very strong UVA filters. (Also, these exact filters are used in the P.Calm sunscreen I reviewed a few weeks ago AND Tocobo’s. Manufacturer Kolmar seems to be very sure of that exact filter combo, and I’ve to agree: I find all sunscreens using this as both effective and pleasant to use.)

Sustainability

Braille on the outer packaging!

Apparently, the box is made from recycled paper and printed with soy ink. That is it. That is all.

A word on the packaging: there’s also the product name in Braille on the box, which is something I’ve never seen before and which I love for inclusivity. The airless pump tube is also appreciated: first, it’s great to preserve the stability of the product itself, and then, it’s super easy to use the appropriate amount of sunscreen every time you use it. (It’s six pumps for 1.4g aka 1/4 tea spoon.)

Application & Finish

Freshly applied after my regular skincare routine

I use the aforementioned six pumps on my face and neck. (Sometimes, the pump malfunctions shortly and then shoots out a bigger blob. Nothing is perfect.)

We’re now in that awkward time of the year when it’s 26C on one day, and 11C the next, so I sometimes use a richer base (aka AoS Antioxidants & Peptides Moisturizer) and sometimes just a serum (The Ordinary’s Soothing Serum). Both work to a certain degree – if your skin is like mine (combo, veering to the drier and more sensitive side due to Tretinoin) you have to skip the moisturizer to reap the promised velvet-like finish. Oilier skin DEFINITELY will have to skip additional moisturizer, while drier skintypes might need one. On me, it transforms slowly to the velvet, non-tacky finish. When I apply it freshly, it definitely is tacky, though, but that disappears.

Does it look glowy? Not particularly. I find that it looks like well-nourished, healthy skin.

Makeup Application

Haruharu Black Rice Airyfit Sunscreen as makeup base
On a different day, as a makeup base

Oh yes! I like it a lot as a makeup base, because it’s so easy: it performs well with powders and creams or liquids. We’ll see how well it’ll hold up in summer, but then it isn’t particularly marketed towards outdoor activities. The official recommendation is to use it is to reapply every two hours, which shows that it isn’t particularly sweat-proof.

This is just such an uncomplicated sunscreen – it doesn’t sting my eyes, doesn’t leave an annoying white residue in my eyebrows or baby hairs, doesn’t pool in fine lines nor does it feel sticky.

Comparison

Let’s talk about the filter combination first: both Tocobo and P.Calm sunscreens use it. Of those, Tocobo’s has a fluid-like texture, P.Calm a lotion-like texture, and Haruharu Wonder is a proper cream. Strangely, while Tocobo’s dries fully down to a satin finish, I find Haruharu Wonder’s lighter than P.Calm’s lotion.

Haruharu Wonder also offers a mineral version of this sunscreen, called Black Rice Pure Daily Relief Sunscreen, which I don’t know and don’t intend to test (I’m not for that mineral sunscreen life).

I would absolutely buy this one again, although I doubt that it’s super usable during summer when it’s hot and humid. Right now, it’s my favourite.
