When I saw the picture of Beyer & Söhne Dayshade, I was crazy excited. A sunscreen that’s not white-based? WOW, I just have to try it! AND it has great antioxidant properties? Well, it’s just too good to be true! WITH a 20% discount? (I got it when it just launched) It’ll be a sin to not buy it. So I did. Beyer & Söhne Dayshade SPF 50: Review!

Beyer & Söhne is a small German, hm, indie skincare brand, I guess. The two guys behind it are pharmacists, and started their brand with their moisturiser, simply called Hautcreme+ (which translates into moisturiser+) that Dorit has written about again and again. I wasn’t super convinced about that one, but Dayshade is a really innovative product, so of course one of us had to try it! I know NIOD came up with a new sunscreen as well, but I haven’t got to try it. Beyer & Söhne products are vegan, formulated without parabenes, silicones, mineral oil, fragrance, and articifial dyes. Also cruelty-free and made in Germany.

I wanted to test Dayshade for a few weeks before I write this post, so here goes.

My profile

Skin type

I’ve combination skin that can go to extremes, especially in the dry Berlin weather. I react well to oils, so I didn’t hesitate to get this after I realised it’s oil-based. Also, I’m now heading closer to the 40s, so maybe that’s why I’m having difficulties in considering which skin type I am.

Preferences

Despite loving wearing makeup, I prefer mostly low maintenance products. I don’t have xx minutes to wait for my skincare to sink in before starting with my makeup.

The Product

Ingredients

Isoamyl Laurate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Squalane, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol, Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Haematococcus Pluvialis Extract, Tocotrienols, Tocopherol, Astaxanthin, Helianthus, Annuus Seed Oil, Ceramide NP

Formulation

Lots of great things for your skin, mainly ceramides and anti-oxidants. There’s Vitamin E that has great anti-aging properties, and the star ingredient, Astaxanthin, that’s the most potent anti-oxidant of them all. Anti-oxidants boost the SPF, so you’ll get great sun protection. Speaking of SPF – we’re dealing with a solely chemical sunscreen here (of course, you might say, because the worst sunscreens with a white cast are usually mineral sunscreens). The sun protection comes from Tinosorb S, Avobenzone, and Univol. The bottle, btw, is a special material that’s UV-protected.

Consistency

Very liquid and runny. The carrier for the ingredients is oil (mainly Caprylic Trygliceride and Squalane), not the usual transparent silicone based sunscreen formula you might know. It’s an oil.

Application

Wearing Bayer & Sohne Dayshade SPF50 (L-R): Bare Skin, Dayshade, Foundation
Wearing Bayer & Sohne Dayshade SPF50 (L-R): Bare Skin, Dayshade, Foundation

The formula is obviously glowy, and Dayshade does feel oily on my skin. It doesn’t sink quick enough for my taste. In the pictures above, I used two pumps, and somehow it does make my skin looks evened out (maybe it’s the glow + some reddish tint?) and it looks even better with the foundation.

My advice would be to use a foundation that has a powder-like finish like Fenty Beauty. In the picture above I’m used L’Oreal Perfect Match that worked equally well. Or, you could use a mattifying primer like HA Blur.

After I checked with Dorit’s post on the recommended portion of sunscreen, though, and checking back with the website, it said the amount needed to have the adequate protection is 5 pumps.

5 pumps: Impossible!

Even two pumps are already plenty. For this purpose especially, I’ve to put the oil on my palm, otherwise it goes all over the place!

bare face vs 5 pumps

After seeing this picture above, I’m really convinced that Dayshade actually tints my face a bit. It looks alright in the picture, but unfortunately, it is also slick as hell, and 1.5 hours later, there’s no sign of the oil sinking in. So I don’t think I can actually use the recommended amount.

Verdict

(+) I do love the fact that it doesn’t leave a white cast on my darker skin, so I’m not afraid of looking white when I slather on sunscreen.

(+) It doesn’t irritate my skin, doesn’t cause breakouts, and actually makes it look glowing!

(+) Support your local (ish) producer!

(+) Innovation!

(+) Plays well will foundations, especially ones with a powder-like finish.

(-) Too oily for the recommended amount (although I’d rather be oily than white-casted).

I will keep on using it, and eventually I will get my hands on that other non-white sunscreen, NIOD Survival 30.
