Goodbyes to brands and founders, lawsuits, incredible inventions and syphilis – yes, it’s time for the best beauty news in May!
Beauty News
Goodbye Bite Beauty! (As a brand I had never access to, I don’t really care.) (Temptalia)
Goodbye Emily Weiss of Glossier! (Fashionista)
Oh, and goodbye Jerrod Blandino and Jeremy Johnson (ttbt I had to look their names up, because yeah, Too Faced, whatever. They’ve been at the helm of the brand for over 20 years. Enjoy your retirement, guys.) (Musings of a Muse)
Byredo will very likely be bought by L’Oreal. (Fragrantica)
The Inkey List got themselves put on an EU alert list for dangerous products: apparently their salicylic acid cleanser has more salicylic acid than declared on the package.
Fenty is now available in various African countries!
Beauty Stories
This is so awesome: a San Diego startup invents portable cold caps for chemotherapy patients. Those will enable them to lose less hair. Yay for inventions! (10news)
What do brands do now that the overturn of Roe vs. Wade in the US is coming? (Glossy.co)
Can I interest you in a Beach fragrance? (Who What Wear)
Sustainability
The most mind-boggling piece of news yet: Australian sunscreen brand Bondi Sands has been hit by a class action suit in California over their labelling their SPF “reef safe”. I can’t really wrap my mind around that you can sue someone for using a term that’s a) not regulated whatsoever and b) not scientifically proven in any way. (Cosmetics and Toiletries)
Brands and consumers start to realise that mini sizes and deluxe samples are not really sustainable. (Yeahhhhhhh, I’ve been saying that for years, but just to play devil’s advocate for a second: I’d actually prefer people to test a mini size first and then a full-size, before buying a full-size and then returning it for the product to be destroyed.) (PopSugar)
Life, Love and Everything Else
Did the aftermaths of two years of the pandemic destroy your body too? (Glamour)
This is so cool (sorry, I’m a history nerd) (also, not very cool for the real people, obvi): did everyone in Bridgerton suffer from Syphilis?! (Yes, very likely.) (The Conversation)
The Humanities can still offer valuable insight into matters (as someone who studied something completely “useless” at uni, I’m somewhat passionate here): as this Medievalist does who shows that: “(…) there is absolutely no grounds in common law, which reaches back to medieval jurisprudence, to overturn Roe v. Wade. Making such an argument not only lays bare the purely political nature of the decision; by cherry-picking sources, it weakens the originalist school of Constitutional law as a whole.” (The Medievalist)

Flabbergasted about sunscreen labels? Here’s how to read your bottle, and find out more about UVA protection!
A luxury lipstick can be a great pick-me-up (at least for this makeup lover): the packaging, the bullet, the luxurious formula… in other words, I tried the Gucci lipsticks, and was smitten.
Another month, another Allies of Skin review, and this time I’m a bit meh about their probiotics mist. I also tried to find a dupe for L’Occitane’s Almond Shower Oil (a HG!), and of course, sunscreen reviews! Here’s Astrid’s Anthelios UVMune 400 SPF50+ review (a new sunscreen filter! How exciting!) and mine of Korean brand’s Scinic Super Mild Sun Essence SPF50 and Ladival’s Urban Fluid SPF50. Until next time: and don’t forget to wear your sunscreen!
Thank you so much for all of this information! I am finding it incredibly helpful. One question, is there a way for me to turn off the moving “Featured” section on your web page? I am hypersensitive (auto-immune disorder) and the moving items makes it hard to read your work.
Hi Stephanie, thank you very much for your kind words and your input. I’ll have a look into the “Featured” issue! Right now I’d say it might be easier for you to read posts on a mobile/ipad etc. because in mobile mode the site looks slightly different and might be easier to read for you. Thanks a lot for your feedback!
