I’ve a soft spot in my heart for luxury lipsticks, even if I try to talk myself out of them again and again… Today’s review is about Gucci’s lipsticks, their Satin formula, and specifically Moira Sienna (shade 202). Here’s my Gucci Satin lipstick Moira Sienna review.

Gucci Beauty has been around since 2014 (when Pat McGrath was their Creative Director – yes, really!). I can’t remember the line from back then – they definitely suffered from changing hands again and again: from P&G to Coty, where the fragrance portfolio bloomed (sorry, had to be done) with the launch of fragrances like Bloom. When Alessandro Michele became creative director, the beauty sector was extended with the inaugural launch of lipsticks, nailpolish, bronzing powder and foundation. Since then, they’ve launched an eyeshadow palette, mascara, eyeliner and lip pencils. Just recently, they launched liquid lipsticks.

Michele cites the influence of “Old Hollywood” and movie glamour for the packaging of the line, but instead of a consequently dated look, the line manages to combine glamour and elegance (and a certain whimsy) with a cool, chic, diverse and approachable look. (Have a look here, for example.) Lipsticks are always shown on a diversity of skintones and genders.

The result is utterly refreshing and charming: that old timey look could’ve gone so wrong with an array of blonde bombshells, but – doesn’t.

I can tell you right here that the allure of the lipsticks for me comes from the packaging. I lusted for that Art Deco bullet and wanted it on my vanity. Picture my surprise that the lipstick formula is absolutely lovely.

Description – Satin Lipsticks

Gucci Satin lipstick Moira Sienna

A vibrant collection of creamy, color-rich lipsticks with a long-lasting finish, the Rouge à Lèvres Satin lip color delivers bold pigment with an ultra-light and moisturizing feel that leaves lips smooth and soft. (…) The bold color palette speaks to the eccentric and free-spirited mood of the House’s collections—an unconfined and unlimited form of self-expression—with each lipstick encased within precious gold-toned packaging etched with an intricately engraved design.

Gucci

The Gucci website also stresses that all lipstick shades can be mixed for individual colours, and that lipsticks can also be used as blush.

A number of waxes result in the satin finish – the lipstick isn’t too soft or shiny. Beware of a lot of fragrance (it smells like Violet candies – those little purple pastilles – to me), including Citronellol and Linalool.

Gucci Satin lipstick Moira Sienna: review

wearing Gucci Moira Sienna

Simply described as “raspberry” on their website, Moira Sienna is a lovely dusky, brownish rose. It has a satin finish: for Gucci, that apparently means an old-timey “lipstick” finish – the one that your mom mainly used. It’s not shiny, but far away from a matte.

Wear

Gucci’s satin formula finishes can be easily applied straight from the bullet and work very well without a lip pencil and with minimal fuss.

On me, Moira Sienna holds up for about four hours with drinking and talking. It won’t survive a meal, but that’s always a hard task. It’s absolutely not smudge- or kissproof and leave a very light stain.

During that time, Moira Sienna feels incredibly – well, nice. It truly does. No, it’s not incredibly moisturizing, but just feels good.

Comparison

The most similar finish and feel would maybe be Guerlain’s Rouge G or Tom Ford’s Rouge a Levres. Dries van Noten’s satin formula feels both thinner and drier. Mac’s Love Me lipsticks are similar, maybe a smidge thicker-feeling on the lips, while Gucci’s has more slip. Hermes satin formula is even thinner and wears off more quickly.

Worth it?

Gucci Satin lipsticks worth it

I can’t help but say yes. I find the colour range very alluring, as the packaging. It’s also a very good formula that I like, at a lower price point than many luxury brands.

Availability & Price
