A not so pedestrian hand wash, a comfort watch and kittens!

Apivita Grapefruit & Propolis Hand Wash

October best beauty finds

When we went to Crete at the beginning of October, the hotel we stayed at used Apivita amenities – which made sense, Apivita being a Greek ‘natural’ beauty brand. Founded in Athens in 1979 by two pharmacists, Niki & Nikos Koutsianas, Apivita means “life of the bee”.

‘Our logo is inspired by the “Bees of Malia”, a unique piece of Minoan jewelry from the Middle Bronze Age (c. 1700 BC) which depicts two bees storing a drop of honey in their honeycomb, encircled by Apollo’s lyre.’

And yes, honey and Greek flora and fauna feature heavily in their products.

The Grapefruit & Propolis Hand Wash has a gorgeous scent (and, apparently ‘Provides mild antiseptic action thanks to propolis extract’). It’s the smell of a freshly peeled grapefruit with an undertone of the herbal, slightly savioury Greek honey. Gorgeous.

I bought it, and it’s one of the best souvenirs: every time I wash my hands, I feel like I’m back under the Greek sun, listening to the ocean’s waves. It’s also astonishingly affordable, with 300ml for around 10€.

Baby Animal Cam: Tinykittens!

Tinykittens rescue cats livestream

This month, Netflix launched a new version of reality TV: a livestream from Cleveland Zoo, showing, you guessed it, baby animals. No presenter, no voice-over, just the ultimate comfort TV. Now, imagine if I told you that there’s something better out there for your comfort watch: and that’s Tinykittens on YouTube.

Let me count the ways: right now, you’ve got two different livestreams showing two delightful cat families with various kittens. It’s a moderated stream (therefore no weirdos and bots), and you can chat or lurk, whatever you want. (The community of chatters is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and also very international.)

Then, at one point you will meet Shelly, the organization’s founder, who works tirelessly to educate about the importance of TNR and the hidden lives of feral cats. She pops into the stream at various times and you’ll be very jealous, because she gets to play and cuddle with the delightful cats and kittens. And what’s even better: you’ll not give your views to the capitalist machine that is Netflix, but to a wonderful, small, Canadian organization that’s made an incredible impact on their own (worldwide) community. No brainer, right?
