Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer Update: I finally found a foundation that makes this primer sing (AND prevent oxidisation!).

When I last wrote about the Veil Mineral Primer, I was solidly on the fence about it (review). It only worked well with super light foundations for me, and on top of that had the unfortunate tendency to pill over sunscreen.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer review
That’s “one true pairing”, btw.

I’m not the biggest fan of face primers anyway. But then, I honestly believe that with most makeup products, the only question is how to find a way to make them work for your skintype and your preferences. Because, let’s face it: colour cosmetics have come quite a way in the last ten or fifteen years. Sure, there’s been really good products in the past, but I do find that a mediocre product 10 years ago definitely performed mostly worse than a mediocre one today. (I mean, look at a drugstore brand like bh cosmetics – boy are those formulas GOOD! Drugstore eyeshadows 10 years ago? Yeah, well: no.)

So, what I’m saying is – sure, there’re duds today. But I encounter them rarely. If I do have a problem with a product the reason for that is mostly myself and what I want from a product. Sometimes, those two just don’t mesh.

Oxidisation – check!

That’s ALSO the reason why I’m not really a fan of decluttering – I’m usually convinced that some day, that magical day will come. Lo and behold, for me and Hourglass’ Veil, it finally happened. I knew that Mineral Veil Primer did manage to hold oxidation in check, but found that it made the only product I tested it with (Niod’s Survival 30) look overly textured.

When I bought Fenty’s Soft Matte Powder Foundation, I realized that not only pulled really yellow on me, but also that it oxidises over time (review). What’s even more annoying is that it manages to make all my highlighters/bronzers/blushes veer yellow/orange too. No setting or finishing powder could make that go away – but Hourglass’ Veil Mineral Primer does.

Keep on trying!

avoid foundation from oxidizing

Here’s my advice: if you own products that you can’t make work immediately when you buy them, don’t give up on them. Especially if they’re base products – you might find a match that makes them shine at one point. Also, in the case of Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer – if you own a foundation, and especially a powder foundation, that oxidises on you, try them together! For me, it manages to hold that annoying yellow-orange shade in check.

The travel size starts at €21 for 8.9ml/0.3 oz at Hourglass’ site.
