I got the Ultra Violette SPF50 Lip Balm Rose, blindly. I couldn’t swatch it first nor find any swatch online for my skin tone. So, this review is for you if you’re thinking of getting one but you have medium dark skin tone with super pigmented lips like mine!
I’m a runner and I love exploring outdoors when it’s sunny, so wearing SPF on my lips was something I’m trying to improve over the years. Sometimes there are pretty lip balms with SPF like Ilia Beauty Lip Conditioner SPF15 in Kamikaze or L’Occitane Pivoine Sublime Tinted Lip Balm in Rose Amber (SPF 25). but most often these products are difficult to find or not very comfortable to wear.
Would this be the holy grail lip SPF balm I’ve been looking for? Read on!

The Brand
Ultra Violette is an Australian brand focusing on sunscreens. Their premise is a lineup of sunscreen that plays well with other skincare and makeup products, while being comfortable to wear and also has other skin benefiting ingredients.
As for sustainability, there isn’t any specific mention of it on their website and their products also didn’t have any features that reflect sustainability.
Description
Save your pout from sucky sun burn (IYKYK) with our Sheen Screen lip balms! Lanolin, shea butter and cacao seed butter will keep your kisser soft and smooth, while a subtle tint and SPF50 leave behind a bit of shine and a lot of protection.
Ultra Violette website
It has four shades. Two of them have shimmer: Shimmer (colorless holographic shine) and Peach (sheer golden-peachy shimmer). While the two others are not: Rose (tinted dusty mauve), and Nude (sheer universal dusty mauve).
I picked Rose because it looked like it was the darkest of the bunch, and usually “dusty mauve” is a color I could easily wear.

Ultra Violette Sheen Screen SPF50 Hydrating Lip Balm Rose Review
Swatch
The description for Rose is “tinted dusty mauve”. It looks like that in the tube, however upon application on my skin tone, it’s leaning further towards pink. I’m quite surprised at how light this shade is, especially because they claimed it to be universal and this looks like the darkest shade of the bunch.
Notice the difference between the swatch on my arm and on my lips.
As you can see on my lips, it gave a lighter pink tone instead of bringing more color. It’s not a color that brings life into my complexion, but it’s still passable and works well as a topper lip balm.
Application and Consistency
The texture is not sticky and feels moisturizing on the lips. I suffer from dry lips from time to time, and this lip balm helps a lot. As someone who’s not a fan of lip glosses, I think I still would wear this regularly.
The scent smells like vanilla caramel ish to me. I like it a lot and I can say it’s the best SPF50 lip balm I have ever tried. The previous SPF lip balms I tried, had a gritty texture or a smell that made them feel less comfortable. This has absolutely none of that, so I’m planning to have this with me every day in summer, especially when I’m out in the sun (or go for a run).
Color
On its own, not the most flattering color for my skin tone. As you can see in the picture, it is still wearable, and I can still quickly grab and wear this in a pinch.
But, what I really love about it, is because this works on top of whatever lipstick you have on. These days, you don’t want to reapply your lipstick in the public bathroom because that’s actually where you really shouldn’t take off your mask. So a quick fix of my pout with a dab of lipstick and this balm? Perfect.
Verdict on Ultra Violette SPF50 Lip Balm Rose
This Ultra Violette SPF50 Lip Balm is a great product, although the shade range could use an improvement. I could see this being a staple product for adding sun protection for your lips.
Unfortunately, not a holy grail for me just because I prefer matte lips. But I definitely like it enough to want to wear it throughout summer of 2021!
