Let’s look at 2020’s Summer makeup releases! I usually love summer collections. I love the ‘lounging at the pool’ imagery, the nautical themes and the rich golds and bronzes we usually get. Boring? Maybe. Safe? Definitely.

I’m in the mood to be soothed by pretty packaging and sparkly products – aren’t we all?! For this reason alone, why not ogle all the pretty collections coming out right now and dream of a summer that we most likely won’t get, but: let the pretty wash over you.

Chanel: Les Beiges Summer Glow

I had high hopes for Chanel’s Les Beiges edition for 2020, and the teaser pic that’s been floating around since February was just so pretty! Nautical theme and embossing, plus the return of Chanel’s beloved cream bronzer Tan de Soleil?! Alas, it wasn’t meant to be (let that be the motto of 2020): cries of rage echoed through the beauty junkie sphere, because the Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream is nothing like Tan de Soleil and the beautiful Healthy Glow Illuminating Powders are shade-wise challenged (swatches at thebeautylookbook): I guess the lightest only works as a highlighter, while the darker one veers VERY warm (YouTube vid swatches/demo by Michele Wang). Sadness.

Dior: Color Games

Inspired by sports fields. Aha. It also gives you everything but the kitchen sink: eyeshadows, various lip and cheek products, (scented!!!!!) nail polishes, AND base products. It’s certainly colourful, and premieres a new Dior logo that’s embossed in every powder product that I find butt-ugly (swatches in this YouTube vid by Morgan Turner). Where’s the pretty?!?!

Guerlain: Brazilian Club

HERE. It’s here. As always, we have a Terracotta collection and the ‘regular’ summer collection (pics from BBB). The regular collection has the wonderfully cheerful Brazilian Fizz Meteorites, in which the outer packaging with a great pattern in pinks yellows and peaches is mirrored by the ‘pearls’ inside that are predominantly peach and pink (swatch at Beautynews.ru). The Terracotta Bronzer Brazilian Beach is pink/tan with a gold overspray that’s marvellous to behold. I own a few of the previous years’ iterations and don’t use them very often, but I love to take them out and look at them. Oh, there’s also a peachy blush. I feel cheered up just by looking at the whole collection.

NARS: Bronzing Collection

While definitely meeting the ‘bronzed and glowy’ requirement, most of Nars’ Bronzing Collection is a miss for me. The ColourPop-esque eyeshadows/pressed pigment thingies failed before, and I’m not convinced. Two different lineups of bronzing powders, one shimmery, one matte, a super-sized (eyeroll) Laguna, lip balms and lip oils. If you’re a fan of the Laguna bronzer, you’ll find it in MANY forms throughout the collection (swatches of everything at alittlebitetc).

Estée Lauder: Bronze Goddess Azur

The OG Bronze Goddess re-releases three beloved highlighters (Heatwave, Modern Mercury, Solar Crush – all too warm and dark for me), a fancy looking, but rather basic eyeshadow palette (swatches at reallyree), and a new iteration of the eponymous Bronze Goddess fragrance, called Azur (with notes of lemon). Fear not, the ‘old’ and beloved Eau Fraiche makes an appearance again, together with a Body Creme.

Clinique

Yup, a brand that’s featured rarely in here. But look at those blushes (I’m afraid they’re an Asian exclusive) and the highlighter and bronzer (swatches from Temptalia)! Basic? Sure. Pretty? Hell yeah. All limited edition, and the blushes are shades that’re already in the lineup. Looking at them makes me happy. (I should break out the Cheek Pops that I own!)

MAC: Bronzer Collection

Wax droplets on Christmas baubles is honestly all I can see and it has a similar vibe to Nars’, with the eyeshadows even more of a dud (honestly, stay away! I’ve been burned before by the Foiled Eyeshadows!). Also, more shimmery body and base products, if that’s your thing. The Face Glazes could be nice (swatches by @dominic_mua)? (Cream/liquid face highlighters/bronzers/blushes are having a moment, no?)

Tom Ford: Soleil Blanc

So. Tommy releases (same procedure as every year, Miss Sophie) the usual Soleil Blanc range (and even I’ve to admit that I like the fragrance a LOT, if you go for those summery, lotion & coconut type of scents) and as you might know, I don’t like TF. At all. Neither the formulas nor colours work for me. For the sake of completeness, this time’s collection includes an illuminator, a tinted moisturiser and three different kinds of lip products.

The reason that he’s in this roundup is simply the swatch pictures. Which, SURE, nothing makes me want to acquire a luxury product as much as swatch pictures of female limbs squished together. NOTHING. Oh Tommy.

Summer makeup releases: Must-haves

Clinique Powder Pop Summer 2020 review

Just for shits and giggles: a scented Dior nail polish. Hah, the days of my youth!

A cream product: MAC’s Face Glaze.

For the pretty, high-end edition: Guerlain, all of it. AAAALLLLLLLL.

For the pretty, slightly cheaper: Clinique’s super cute cheek products.

Let’s get bronzed: No matter if you crave shimmery or matte, Nars will come through with the proper shade of bronzer for you. If one of the two shades matches you, go for Chanel’s and bask in your luck.
