Deciem news! Snail mucin! Sustainable clothes! The patriarchy! Why we all will look like clones soon! And: what Kim Kardashian’s butt and MAC have in common. In short: The hottest beauty news and posts in October.

Beauty News

MAC has a new global creative director: former ‘Paper’ editor Drew Elliott. (He’s the one responsible for that Kim Kardashion cover featuring her butt and a glass of champagne. Remember? No? – Maybe for the best.) (Fashionista)

Yay, you can easily order Shangpree products in Germany via Hagel-Shop!

Gucci Beauty comes to Germany via Douglas.

Widely reported, part 1: Shiseido bought Drunk Elephant.

Widely reported, part 2: Sunday Riley got admonished by the FTC for faking reviews, nothing happens.

Estée Lauder did get into the crosshairs of activists when Ronald Lauder’s donations to Trump rallies in 2017 became widely known. (I looked it up: He donated HEAVILY to the Republicans, but also specifically to Trump. Millionaires in 2017 might have been done that all over the US, I guess – birds of a feather and so on – but would Ronald Lauder, President of the World Jewish Congress do it again today? That’s the question, isn’t it?) (Yahoo)

Beauty Stories

What’s happening at Deciem nowadays? Vogue talks to CEO Nicola Killner.

A recent study shows that air pollution might be linked to hair loss. Ugh. Do remember to diligently wash your hair every night when you’re in very polluted areas. (Allure)

The weird origin stories that drive skincare brands. We’ve all heard the stories: the youthful hands of workers handling this weird stuff, and the entrepreneur using it… Is there some truth to those, or is it just marketing? (Fashionista)

‘Instagram face’ is here to stay. We all will end up looking like clones (cue a lot of internal screaming on my part). (Vice)

Sustainability

beauty news, releases, scandals October 2019

How sustainable are clothes rental services? Surprisingly, still not very sustainable, though slightly better than succumbing to temptation and buying new clothes. As the article succinctly puts it: “Wearing what’s already in your closet is the most sustainable way to get dressed.” (Elle)

Are sheet masks the new plastic straws, asks Vogue. Yes, they are. While for some people straws are a necessity (some illnesses and disabilities make it very hard to drink from a glass or cup), NOBODY needs a sheet mask. Ditch them!

Where to recycle beauty packaging on a British high street. Very helpful! (Stylist)

Life, love and everything else

Oh, the patriarchy. Sigh. “And if you try to call it what it is — patriarchy! — they counter that you’re seeing conspiracy where it’s just business, it’s just tradition, it’s just following protocol, it’s just friendship.” (Anne Helen Petersen)

Oh, Brexit. Sigh. Famous Brits write love letters to Europe. (The Guardian)

Oh, Instagram: Aspirational Realness. The ‘real’ life on Instagram is a lie, and it’s a lie that’s supposed to sell you stuff. “I can’t afford a $3,000 purse and look like this 6-foot-tall, 14-year-old model, one might think, but I could put a $300 one on my credit card and lose 20 pounds to look like this Instagram influencer.” (Quartzy)

The easiest (and cheapest) way to get better skin; will retinol be banned in Germany? And a pampering skincare sesh for sensitive skin. In a total tonal turnaround, if you’re heading into warmer climes you might want to know how to layer sunscreen (or bookmark it for your next vacation). Speaking of vacations, I went to Portugal and found the best soap ever.

Makeup-wise, Astrid’s looks with Fenty’s Moroccan Spice palette will inspire you to play around with colours more often and I found a great all-rounder lip colour for Fall (that would totally go with it).

Christmas is coming, and my Holiday collection round-up is slightly different with still all the info you might need for your buying decisions. And finally, heading into colder weather, I found myself in need of a new cosy and warm fragrance. I found two.
