The obvious answer to the question above is, of course, however you want to. There’re some methods and products that I love, though, and which I will share in this post. Hint: The Glitter & Glow formula doesn’t make it to the list. Here’s the how to wear glitter – Stila Glitter & Glow fairy tail review!

Why?

I’ve read some makeup guides geared towards women over 40, and they all seem to be really sure that you’re supposed to go towards matte and neutral eyeshadows. That’s because you’re not supposed to draw attention to your textured lids and fine lines around your eyes, apparently.

Well, I can say with confidence that a neutral matte eye makes me look dead in the worst way, and that, texture or not, I find a pop of a shimmery eye shadow, much more youthful. It opens up your eye. If you find a glitter that doesn’t accentuate lines and texture, all the better, but usually, I find that hard, and just go for the shimmery route.

Products I really like: L’Oreal infallible eyeshadow in Bronzed Taupe; MAC’s Dazzleshadow in She Sparkles; Stila Shimmer & Glow in cloud.

I usually add some glitter/shimmery eye shadow on the middle of the lid – I found Too Faced’s glitter glue invaluable for that. It really makes glitter particles stay put, and not migrate all over your cheeks. If I used something super shimmery on the lid, I always use a neutral matte shade to blend out the edges and produce a somehow polished look.

Btw, if you want to dip your toes into grown-up glitter, choose a rather neutral shade that adds a bit of interest to your look. (Also, it opens your eyes and adds some pizzaz to a look.)

There’re a lot of both cream and powder products I rely on for my glitter/shimmer needs. The best I’ve found are MAC’s Dazzleshadows (review here), Stila’s Shimmer & Glow (reviewed here), Urban Decay’s Liquid Moondust eyeshadows, L’Oreal’s Infallibles – all range (even within their own line-up) from shimmery to glittery. You’re surely able to find a shade that suits your needs.

Why Stila’s Glitter & Glow isn’t even on that list

You might remember that I was super impressed by Stila’s sister product, their Shimmer & Glow eyeshadow, that I tested and love. What I loved most about it was its interesting shade that shifted between pink and gold, and also the impressive longevity. Fairy tail, the shade I got (thank you, Britta!) is even more shifty. It reminds me of ColourPop’s So Quiche Supershock Shadow, shifting from green to pink.

Formula & texture

Stila fairy tail vs. Urban Decay liquid moondust in spacetime.

Fairy tail doesn’t have a discernible base colour. It’s basically just colour shifting flakes of glitters. They shift from pink to green, while sometimes, when the light doesn’t hit them, they just look like little brownish specks. (Urban Decay’s Spacetime isn’t that different, but has a bronzey base, and astonishingly, some larger glitter flecks.) It takes a while to set, while you best don’t move your eyelids too much – the formula might transfer to the space above your crease otherwise. (Like it does for me.) The formula feels cool and a bit weird when it dries down – a slightly burning sensation?

Longevity

And this is where I despair. I’ve tried everything – different types of primers, layering fairy tail over all kinds of eyeshadows (paints, paint pots, powder shadows), and the formula is the worst. It creases after two hours, and I’ve got flakes of glitter all over my cheekbones and undereyes after about four hours. It’s a mess, and it doesn’t look cute. It settles in little groups and spots of glitters on my lids, while some spots look bare and the whole look is one of hell, no.
