I rarely write about drugstore makeup, but drugstore brands have come a long way, and my latest find is from German brand essence – and it’s 1,45€! (It’s also absolutely fabulous.) Have a look at the best budget lipliner!

A house-keeping note, before we start: I’ve decided to post on every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday in June. We’ll see how that goes…

I was once totally into the cheap thrills of drugstore beauty (have a look at my no-buy post to see how I stopped), but in the end, it would be ultimately the product I wouldn’t reach for when I could choose between my high-end products and a drugstore one. I just love the whole deal that comes with high-end (packaging, scent, etc.). But then, from time to time I’ve found a truly stellar product at the drugstore (my Korean peripera tints come to mind), proving me wrong.

Where?

First, why does it have to be a bloody paper chase to find those? They’re maybe only at Müller (drugstore chain), but my usual one didn’t carry them, and it was by pure chance that I finally found them – because I simply had given up. Yup, I had read about them before, and that had made me curious, but jeez, essence, why do I have to look into three different branches to find one that carried the draw the line lipliners?!

Why?

Incredibly pigmented and smooth – essence so un-grey-tful lipliner

I tried the most unique colour of their line-up of 12 shades – so un-grey-tful (ouch, that name! But then, their line is geared towards 12-year-olds, so I shouldn’t wonder. Perhaps.) is a greyish mauve. It runs towards purple and isn’t too cool – I get away with wearing it, and I’m usually around NC15 in MAC-speak.

Essence says:

“these supple lipliners effortlessly glide over the lips to outline them. … thanks to the highly pigmented texture, you can trace any shape and irregular outlines are a thing of the past!”

How?

What essence doesn’t say: What’s truly great about them is their texture. Yes, sure, highly pigmented, yes. But: Why on earth don’t they mention that the formula is one of the great ones that goes on super-creamy, and then turn powdery when it sets?! Also? These. Won’t. Budge. Nope. Not at all. Also, try using them on their own, because they do double duty as a liner and a lipstick easily.

You see that the swatch runs a lot darker than it is on my lips. Also, how smooth does it look?!

On it’s own, it lasts until I have a really greasy meal. (Drinking or kissing won’t kill it.) With a creamy lipstick layered on top, lasting power decreases. Be careful to not over-apply, if you do, the layer of product on your lips will start to crumble. (Eeeeek.)

But nevertheless: It’s pleasant to apply (granted, it dries out my lips after a while, but which matte lipstick doesn’t?! Haven’t found that magical creature yet!), it’s a unique colour, it has great lasting power, and then it’s 1,45€.

RECOMMENDED.
