Will xyz gives you cancer is the theme of this post. Look, I’m as bummed about it as you are, but what can I do?! Also, Madonna’s face, the case of the disappearing middle age and – cashmere recycling?! Yes. Read on for the beauty news in February!

UV-Nail lamps for nails will give you cancer!? (It’s complicated. Use sunscreen!) (TeenVogue)

Olaplex as a company has been riddled by law suits lately: first, it was a fight with L’Oreal over patents, and now it’s with customers who claim the products gave them hair loss. (More infos at Bloomberg, another take from Abby Yung on YouTube)

Kosas’ concealers tend to grow mold, and if that’s not the best case for a nice dose of parabens, I don’t know. ‘Free-from lists’, as rightly pointed out in the article, do more harm than good. (NBC News)

Ariana Grande buys her own brand back from Forma (the Morphe saga, part 1267867643). Of all the more serious celebs with a beauty brand, she seems like the one who really doesn’t give a damn, so surprising.  (Fashion Network)

Beauty Stories

No, TikTok, your skincare products won’t give you cancer. Michelle from Labmuffin debunks TikTok myths, and she does so in a wonderfully exasperated way. (If I were a scientist, I’d roll around on the floor screaming continually.)

PSA: Gua Sha can’t dissolve a double chin. (I’m always so conflicted when it comes to Gua Sha, because of all the cultural appropriation and fatphobia issues surrounding it.) (Allure)

Forever chemicals in makeup are a thing (meaning, undoubtedly there), but how bad is that? (Refinery)

Coty wants to establish a new definition of beauty by petitioning to redefine the term in the dictionary. This… HAS to be a PR stunt, right? Right?! (Stylist)

Sustainability

sustainable beauty news

Ralph Lauren has launched a cashmere recycling program, which, honestly, I’d support in a heartbeat if I’d live in the US. Cashmere is finicky, even with the best of care, and having a place recycling your old pieces? Groundbreaking. (Truly, and not in a Miranda Priestley way.) (Apparel Insider)

Life, Love and Everything Else

Whatever happened to middle age?! Has it – disappeared?!?! (Guardian)

Madonna’s new face and the ever-ongoing case of misogyny. (Vogue)

This is long, and so, so so good: The NYT talks to a pain specialist, and it’s fascinating, especially for someone wo’s dealing with chronic pain. Also good: the deep dive into hormone therapy during menopause.

On the Blog

best blog posts in February

Let’s start with reviews: I wrote about a beautyblender dupe that’s not really a dupe (PawPaw sponges), Lisa Eldridge’s eyeshadow palette in Myth, and my favourite unisex fragrances. Hair was a big thing: my investigation into bond building treatments and the new Living Proof Triple Bond Treatment, and my new hair colour also featured in my February best beauty finds. Then, I ranted about what companies, brands and Instagram call ‘sustainable’ (snort) and wrote about Niacinamide and why it is in virtually any new product that’s released.

Also, you should definitely have a look into the new and revamped sunscreen cheat sheet – which, honestly, includes everything I learned about sunscreen, ever, and also is a handy database to check out all the sunscreens we reviewed in the last three years.
