My 2021 beauty resolutions are about joy.

I wanted to buy better in 2020: I wanted to find new, sustainable, exciting brands and generally curb my buying habits. Well, I – didn’t. While I didn’t go completely overboard (the pictures in this post show everything makeup-related I bought this year), it was VERY easy to shop because the day was particularly crappy or I felt depressed. And in the case of skincare, I deliberately build up stash of backups of my staples, because. You know. There was (is, aaaaargh) a pandemic and you can’t know if everything will be still available tomorrow. (Completely bonkers, but hey, instead of toilet paper, this was my security blanket.) Now, in 2021, I have smaller plans.

Makeup resolution: Wear lipstick

2021 beauty resolutions: finally wear lipstick again.

Not really, obviously. But lipstick has become a symbol of ‘normal’, of the beforetimes, when I would never leave the house without a lipstick on. Now, it’s different: under a mask, I find lipstick horribly uncomfortable, and at home? I don’t know why, but 2020 gave me the driest lips I’ve ever had, so it’s all chapstick and lipmasks. And I can’t wait wearing lipstick properly again.

Beauty resolution: Appreciate my stash!

enjoy your beauty stash
Everything makeup-related that I bought in 2020.

In 2020, I REALLY appreciated that I’m not a minimalist by nature. I love my beauty stash, and it doesn’t overwhelm me – but obviously, there’re products languishing in the backs of drawers that were never used: just because my taste and my needs changed. But when spring 2020 came around, I again started using that super matte foundation, that setting powder and spray, was appreciative of various lip masks, and clay masks I found that I hadn’t used in a while.

Obviously, be prudent in such a situation: be mindful of textures and scents, and throw products away when something seems weird about them. It’s not worth taking a health risk (here’s what the FDA says about expiration dates).

Also, it doesn’t hurt to go through your stash twice a year to throw away products that have gone off or dried out and bring those who’re in danger of drying out to your desk to use and enjoy them!

Skincare resolution: try things and not wreck my skin

Products I want to try in 2021.

I love skincare for a lot of reasons: obviously because it makes my skin looking nice (or not, but more on that later) and protects it from the sun. But I also love the geekiness of it, how much I learn about it nearly every day and how many smart people I met because of it.

But. I would love only to use skincare my skin needs and benefits from. There’re so many benefits going along with it: raised sustainability. Saving money. Possibly (likely) better skin. But on the other side, I would potentially miss great new products, and couldn’t write about new discoveries. I would miss that. In the meantime, I’m tracking the new additions to my skincare regime meticulously and try to find out if my skin likes them, if they’re indispensible, or not.
