I’ve had my Dyson dryer for around five years now. In my original review, I was lukewarm about it. Just this month I suddenly saw the light. More in my Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer update.

Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer update: What is it?

‘The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer is engineered to protect hair from extreme heat damage, with fast drying and controlled styling to help increase smoothness by 75%, increase shine by up to 132% and decrease frizz and flyaways by up to 61%.’

Dyson

Nowadays, it comes with five different attachments (diffusor, small nozzle, gentle air attachment, flyaway attachment, wide-toothed comb) instead of the three I bought it with (a smoothing nozzle, one nozzle for precise styling, and a diffusor), and in more colors.

It’s still as expensive as when I got it, maybe even more expensive. (I’ve heard that the Shark dryer might be a more cost-effective dupe.)

Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer – OG review

what happened to Dyson's hairdryer

I matched my experiences against Dyson’s claims, and also against my former Braun hair dryer’s performance. I didn’t find it lighter; I didn’t find it significantly lowered my hair’s drying time, nor did it improve shine and condition. Lastly, while it is somewhat less loud than a regular dryer, I found the high pitch of the noise really annoying.

My conclusion five years ago was: not worth it for my needs. I don’t style my hair while blow-drying. The only thing I want from my hair dryer is that it dries my hair, and nothing else. That I can get cheaper from other brands. (Also in my OG review: if you style your hair while blow-drying or have very long or thick hair, your mileage may vary.)

So, what happened?

best high-end hairdryer

Did my hair change? I had it freshly bleached and dyed recently. What happened, too, was that I went on vacation and had the absolute not-pleasure to use hotel hair dryers continuously. They ranged from meh to absolutely horrifying, and looking at pictures (you can see that very well in my review of UV protection clothing which relies heavily on exactly those vacation pics) my hair looks like frizz central. (Even though I lugged most of my haircare products around!)

THEN I came back, used the much-maligned Dyson, and clouds parted, and angels sung. (Or something.) For the first time ever, I saw the difference in my hair. On top of that, my – honestly, I even hesitate to call it that! – drying technique hasn’t changed. I STILL blast my hair dry without any brush. It’s also possible that my hair condition is just worse than five years ago. Who knows?

Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer update: Conclusion

Sometimes, it really needs a long, long, loooooooong time to start to value a product!

Also, however my stance on the Dyson Supersonic, it still looks and works great after five years. Maybe the price is actually worth it?!
