Beauty Stories

Beauty news in January

The secret to great skin is being rich. A bit provocative, sure, but… rather reasonably argued? Think about all those facials you can’t have, because they’re incredibly expensive? (The Atlantic)

It’s award show season, and if you thought that it’s kind of random which products makeup artists use on their clients? Think again. It’s a big, money-making machine. And no, Gaga didn’t wear that lipstick because she loved it. (Vox)

Let’s think about the importance of skincare for us beauty junkies again. Maybe it’s about – community?! Tracy from Fanserviced was involved in that piece, and I like her voice. (Vox)

The Fenty effect trickles down to skincare. (Although I’ve to say that I think Barbara Sturm’s products are vastly overpriced for what they are. Would like to see more affordable lines!) (Business of Fashion)

What you can learn, and what you cannot, from an ingredient list! Very informative, very helpful! (The Acid Queen)

Cooking – absolutely necessary, and still – an absolute drag. Is it wrong for (especially) women to absolutely not care to cook? (Spoiler: it’s ok.) (Popula)

The new normal: looking at the news and thinking that we’re heading into disaster. Artist Mauro Gatto drew all the good things that happened in 2018 – so maybe… not a disaster after all? (Bored Panda)

Do you need some travel inspo? The NYT has 52 places you should (could) visit in 2019. Sigh. I miss travelling.

Mental Health

Baking (superfluous, pretty) is something that especially millennials turn to to elevate anxiety. Silly? (Why are traditionally female fields under such close scrutiny anyways?!?!) (The Atlantic)

The topic of millenials and burn-out was all over my SM. Anne Helen Petersen wrote a great article about it. Do read! (Even if you think ‘why should I care about burn-out?’ It’s not about burn-out. I mean, it is, but then – it isn’t.

Netflix shrewdly released their Marie Kondo documentary at the beginning of the new year, tapping right into those January resolutions. Isn’t it a bit short-fetched to think tidying up can resolve all sorts of underlying issues? This is the best piece about the series. It also addresses my own critique of the MariKondo franchise – it’s not about going along with less. It’s about having the absolute best, the right stuff for you, which is as consumerist as it gets. We were, as everybody in the community, totally shocked when we heard of Brandon Truaxe’s death, so we wrote a tribute. It was also still very much the beginning of the year, so there’re my 2019 beauty resolutions, a life-saver for my dry skin, and my attempts to shop my beauty stash more, which culminated in my trying to find dupes for Melt’s new Blueprint stack. Astrid tried organic brand Kora, and I slathered my face in oil – sunscreen oil, that is (it’s a thing!). And there’s the Spring round-up! Rejoice!
