Best picks for beautiful brown lipsticks! All throughout spring, I’ve had a thing for brown lipsticks. Thing is, it doesn’t have to look super 90s (although they are beautiful too), and and my quest have lead to several I would totally recommend for medium-dark tanned skin. Aka, how to wear brown lipstick in a way that looks fresh and modern.
I have worn them through the years since I am a beauty addict, but recently I realized how much I actually like to wear it and why I am drawn to it.
- When the skin tone is super warm and tanned (mine verges on an orange tone the more I tan). This year I was just very lucky to keep the tropical holidays tan back in March, and then multiple days of sunshine in Berlin and Madrid. And running, which means I’m (sweating!) outdoors. Brown lippies go well with that kind of undertone.
- Living in Berlin, which means I can wear a non-traditional look and be more experimental with colors I put on my face. Nobody will bat an eye.
- My sudden unexplainable love of a warm-toned eyeshadow. Just like the Chanel Eclat Enigmatique quad (reviewed here) and worn for all the looks for these lipsticks).
MAC Taraji P Henson 2 Viva Glam Lipstick
(Limited Edition, 2017). It’s a coppery brown with gold pearl, a Frost formula. Not necessarily moisturizing on the lips, but also not drying.

Fenty Beauty Shawty Plush Matte Lipstick
The color is described as warm chestnut on their site. It’s definitely a reddish brown, and the texture is matte. I find it slightly drying, but not chalky. It’s not transfer proof, and I find the texture looks a bit thick, I guess it’s because it’s so pigmented? So you’ve got to pick a color that suits you really well because it doesn’t let the color of your lips peek through.
Anyhow, I love this color as well, it brings some brightness to the face!
Urban Decay 1993 Lipstick
A warm brown. The Urban Decay site describes the finish as a ‘comfort matte’, and I believe it. It’s comfortable to wear, and not drying at all. The color is closer to a nude on me, a classic reminder of the amazing 90s trend of the brown lippie ;).
Huda Beauty Spice Girl Liquid Matte Lipstick
A brownish mauve. The formula has kind of a cult status for liquid mattes, and I can see why. It stays on, it’s kiss-proof, and it’s not drying at all. It starts very liquid when you apply it, and then clings to your lips like there’s no tomorrow.
