This month, we have it all: Something for the lipstick lovers, the brush aficionados, nailart addicts, some beauty industry intel, and also a very good article about what it implies if we call grown women ‘girls’. In short, our June linklove is shock full of great reads!

BEAUTY

Alicia Keys made a big splash in writing about how she stopped wearing make-up because she felt that it somehow covers up her true self and I pity her a bit. There’s a beautiful woman with an amazing career who doubtlessly worked with a lot of talented Makeup-Artists. And all she ever got from that experience was that she felt not like herself?! Wow. I want to drag her to the next Sephora, or even better, sit her down and show her how much FUN makeup can be and how it can express different aspects of yourself, bring out the diva, the goth, the femme fatale, the girl, the lady. It doesn’t have to be to cover up perceived ‘flaws’, to make something better. It’s about playing, Alicia. It’s creative. It can even be art.

Want to have a peek inside the business side of beauty? Have a look at the most valueable beauty brands in the world. We’re talking about billions, btw.

‘100 years in …’ videos have become quite popular recently. Here’s the 100 years in nailart. Whenever I see those kind of vids, the most striking thing to me is always that nowadays, everything goes, really. Do whatever strikes your fancy. And isn’t that incredibly liberating?!

For the geeky lipstick lover, and also for the ingredient-list-readers: What’s in a lipstick? Labmuffin comes forward with an easily readable, informative post that sheds some light on all those long words that can be found when you squint at the label and wonder what the heck that might be.

Staying on the lipstick topic, here’s an app for you that allows you virtually to try on alllllllll the new Urban Decay Vice lipsticks. For those days when you’re wondering how you’d look with a bright blue lip, but aren’t that adventurous to actually go out and test it, you know?

Brushes. I loooooooove brushes. I’m guilty of standing at counters petting them. Yup. For all budding brush-lovers out there, Magi has a great video in which she explains which brushes she uses for different eye looks (in German) and gives some recommendations for her personal brush starter-kit. What I love about the vid is that she actually demonstrates different application techniques with different brushes.

Crinkle-free skin and silky soft hair right when you wake up? The right pillow-case might help. I’m putting a silk pillow-case on my birthday wishlist immediately!

Are you a beauty sleuth who wants to find out what’s in your products, and also if different products have similar or even the same ingredients? BBB is here to help with a few pointers.

BEAUTY NEWS – Germany

NYX will be at dm and apparently Rossmann is thinking about adding Sleek to their brands. Wow. Magi mentions that in her post about the bi-annual Catrice line-up overhaul.

LIFESTYLE

What does it mean when we call women girls? (The ‘we’ in question is the female population, btw.) Very thought-provoking with a twist – I went into reading this fully prepared for a feminist approach ‘don’t belittle grown women’-style, but it’s not like this at all. Best read of the month, really.

Oh, oh oh! An oral history re-telling about how ‘The Devil wears Prada’ movie came to be. I (and everybody and their table lamp) love TDWP, and it’s a lot of fun to read what happened before and during the making of the movie (and all the gossipy bits). Also, I want to be Meryl Streep when I grow up?
