The rise of skincare continues, an oral history of Ruby Woo and how a piece of US-legislation might be the start of more transparent labels and nomenclature (no more ‘clean’ and ‘non-toxic’ labels willy-nilly!). Also, snacks for the apocalypse. In short, here’re the hottest beauty news and posts in February.

Nars summer 2020

Nars is to release pressed pigments that look like manufactured at ColourPop. You like?

Brands branching out into skincare: Huda Beauty (British Beauty Blogger), Catrice (Innen & Außen). Are you interested?

Controversy around Mecca claiming to sell ‘only cruelty-free’ brands. Can I say that this argument pisses me off regularly?! (The argument being that brands don’t test themselves and don’t ask labs to test on their behalf – but leave unacknowledged that they sell into countries where tests are mandatory – no matter that the facilities where the actual testing takes place are in no relationship whatsoever to the brand itself, but state-run. I DON’T CARE. You still sell there, ergo, you’re not cruelty-free.) (Sorry for the rant.) (The New Daily)

Related: a piece of US-legislation tries to strengthen transparency around animal testing and thus moving towards transparent labelling. (Fashionista)

Chanel (Cosmeticsdesign) and Coty (Premiumbeautynews) strive towards more sustainability, because consumers demand it.

Beauty Stories

Allure claims cutting open empty products will doom your skin: I remain sceptical. I mean, how convenient for the beauty industry if you’re just supposed to buybuybuy instead of making sure tubes and such are totally empty? (And can be more easily recycled, on top of that!)

The brow lift that changes the world (is it very wrong that my first reaction was ‘I want that’?) (VOX)

An oral history of MAC’s Ruby Woo. (Fashionista)

God forbid we like skincare, as Elizabeth Warren does. (Politico)

Beauty routines can change the life of people with a chronic illness. (Dazeddigital)

Fake Fur is a problem. Just don’t do fur then?! (Dazeddigital)

The problems of being an educated customer: apparently, it’s very easy to sway us. Apparently, it only needs one change. (Fast Company)

How to recycle sneakers. (Fashionista)

Life, Love and Everything Else

How skewed is our relationship with food: exhibit part one – Taylor Swift remembers starving herself, and Buzzfeed’s reporter Anne Helen Petersen (always an excellent writer!) can relate.

Part two: snacks for the apocalypse. Are you a snacker? (Bon Appetit)

Netflix legitimising Goop: Scientists are pissed. (I am too.) (The Daily Beast)

On the Blog

Our own hottest beauty news and posts: Spring makeup release roundup is here! Yay! (Exciting: A sustainable brands roundup will follow!) I’ve been fighting with the upkeep of my hair: first, my Winter product tips from conditioner to hair masks and colour treatments, and second my foray into the world of silk pillows (that are supposed to help with hair and skincare). Speaking of winter: one tiny skincare hack that helps dry winter skin enormously.

What’s the most sustainable beauty brand? The answer might confuse you. Also, when it comes to sustainable beauty hacks, I’ve collected a few ones that are really, really annoying (greenwashing, anyone?), and here’s the first: upcycling.

Oh, and Astrid did a TED talk. No biggie. (See some pics on FB – the complete talk will be on the blog once we get the video from the organisers!)
