And look who’s back!

Hi there! I spent three uncomfortable weeks moving from Shanghai back to Germany, and finally I’ve Wi-Fi in my house again, and my beauty stash is – somehow – back in one place. And here’s what I learned in China in the past three years. As always, I’m happy to answer any questions!

What I learned in China

how to live in Asia
Street in Hongkong.

There’re nice people everywhere. And then there’re a-holes – everywhere, too.

Democracy is awesome. Don’t think it’s a given. Also don’t think it doesn’t matter if you life in one or not. You’ll miss your freedom when it’s taken away from you.

It’s well-worth to leave your bubble once in your life, especially if you’re white and middle-class like me. It’ll broaden your view tremendously to live in a society that doesn’t automatically cater to you.

The view from our living room in Shanghai.

Human beings are astonishingly adaptable creatures: You get used to a completely different life mind-bogglingly quick.

That being said, problems will arise and they will seem like unconquerable obstacles. Looking back, I’m astonished to see how little those problems mattered in the long run.

Countries aren’t developed to cater to expats and tourists, but for the people living there. Never forget that.

What I learned beauty-wise

Expat experiances in Shanghai
Looking clueless under a tree – but always protected against the sun with my giant hat!

A different climate will alter your skincare and makeup preferences and routines. That’s something that you should always keep in mind when reading reviews: A product will perform differently in Arizona’s desert and in Singapore’s cityscape. What works there might not work here.

If you’re going to stand out visibly anyway, why not play with that? (That was the reason for me to finally dye my hair purple, tbh. I knew I would stand out in Shanghai, so I figured to have fun with that. It helped that Shanghai is a very open-minded city, though.)

A makeup look or a skincare routine that’s wholly you can help a lot to ground you in your new life. It’s still you in the mirror, no matter how much everything else changed! That being said, look around you and notice the trends and techniques. Be inspired by the people you see on the streets. Why not try an ombre lip or a Korean 10-step skincare routine (some favourite products)?

Go out and experience as much as you can. Time flies.

Neverthless, I’m happy to be back and blogging!
