It’s never fun to be a newbie, especially when that involves getting naked in front of a stranger. I got my first bikini wax when I was around 30, and my, that felt intimidating! So, for all of you newbies out there, here’re ten things nobody tells you beforehand – and that are quite handy to know!

10 bikini wax facts you need to know

Yes, everybody feels weird when being partly naked and a person you don’t know at all gets rather intimate with your privates. You neither look or smell weird. That being said, it’s common courtesy to show up clean as possible. For the sake of your aesthetician.

Peeing will feel different without any hair. Sex will feel better. Of course, that varies hugely from person to person, but think about it: No hair means nothing gets in the way, you’ll just feel skin on skin, with less friction from pesky hairs.

If you ever wondered how waxing feels compared to sugaring, where hairs are ripped out with the help of a sticky sugar paste: Waxing is quicker, meaning it may feel less painful. It’s also less efficient, though. Sometimes hairs aren’t gripped and ripped out at the base when waxing, but rather break of. (Sugaring also leads to less ingrown hairs.)

Don’t listen to rules as ‘you should go every five weeks’. That depends wholly on how quick or slow your hairs grow! Two things are to consider here. First, sugaring is fine if your hairs are longer than 0,5cm, for waxing they should be even longer. Second, if you go for sugaring, though, it’ll become more painful quickly when your hair has grown a lot. (Fun fact: Hairs grow sparser the older you get. One thing to look forward to?!)

Don’t buy any fancy products for ingrown hairs. Invest in a good exfoliation mitt (I like Kissmee), and if all fails, go for a lotion like Sagella (more about that one here).

If you breathe out while they rip of the strip of wax, you feel less pain. Fact!

Don’t ever go for aspirin of alcohol before you head to an appointment with your waxer. Both have properties that thin the blood, and you don’t want that before waxing. It might lead to bruising. Ibuprofen, though, it’s fine if your pain tolerance is low.

Extra tip: try to never head to a waxing appointment super stressed out. Stress influences your pain tolerance, which means that on a high stress level, you feel pain more keenly.

You can go to a waxing appointment while you’re on your period, but wear a tampon and position the string in a way that it doesn’t get into the way.

And, in the end, the answer to the question on everyone’s mind: Can your waxer see if you’ve had sex recently? Well, depending how recent it was, they totally can. And very likely won’t care one bit.
