I have the typical Asian lashes: on the thinner side, not too long, and definitely not full. I’m still on the lookout for the best mascaras and primers for Asian lashes. Currently I happen to have five opened bottles of mascaras and two bottles of lashes primers (which is rare!). So I figured, let’s do a side by side comparison post and review!
So, let’s get to it then! In this post, I will be comparing:
- two eyelashes primers: Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum and MAC False Lashes Maximizer;
- five mascaras: Max Factor Velvet Volume False Lash Effect Mascara, Maybelline Lash Sensational (Waterproof), L’Oreal Miss Manga Punky Mega Volume Black Latex, NARS Audacious Mascara, and Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill.
My Bare Lashes
I have the typical Southeast Asian lashes: on the thin side, not too long, and basically it’s quite hard to make my lashes show up in normal pictures.
Now you should see why I’m attracted to mascaras which promised things like fake lashes 🙂
MAC False Lashes Maximizer Primer
As much as I like the funny shape of the bottle, and the fact that the primer dries up to a transparent faster than the Dior, the MAC False Lashes Maximizer is making my lashes feeling clumpy. It is not absolutely horrid, especially if you factor in the price, which is of a friendlier budget than the Dior one.
Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum
The Dior Serum consistency definitely feels better than MAC. It makes my lashes seemingly thicker, and there’s a feel of somehow protecting them. The bottle also has a nice weight and a good feel to it.
It goes on really white, and it takes a while to dry out (and not looking so white). I find the result better when you wait a little bit for it to dry before coating on the mascara. The formula is also has a good consistency to it. It’s still creamy, but not clumpy like the MAC one. Also the brush does a good job in making sure it is coating and separating your whole lashes.
Max Factor Velvet Volume False Lash Effect Mascara
There are nothing much fancy or special here in the shape of the wand and the brush. Consistency is also neither thick or thin.
This one is possibly the most natural looking on compared to the rest of the others. When I didn’t wear any primers, it could pass as my lashes but better in the picture.
With the primer, it became more dramatic looking, and also here you can already see that the MAC primer one is making it rather clumpy already.
It deposits a fair amount on your lids, and this is from one swipe over one eyelids.
Maybelline Lash Sensational (Waterproof)
I like the the shape of the wand, the curved shape makes it easy to apply in one swipe. I’ve to admit though, it’s not as easy to do it with my left hand.
As for the waterproof part, having tested this on a hot humid weather, the mascara is holding up quite well. No smudgey eyes!
Removing it, you’d need an oil based remover, as per all of the waterproof mascaras. But after that, straightforward!
L’Oreal Miss Manga Punky Mega Volume Black Latex
The name on this mascara somehow remind me of BDSM things. Also somehow the shape of the wand as well. Is it just me?
Wearing it on my lashes, it’s the most dramatic looking one. It does make my lashes look like it’s latex. Also takes a while for it to dry, so DO NOT try to spray a setting spray directly after, or you’ll get splashes of mascara everywhere.
Of course this one also has the most leftover than all of them. I wonder if then it means one would use this up the fastest, just because of the amount it puts on your lashes.
NARS Audacious Mascara
I like the shape of the wand. So badass it looks like those rotating trap from Prince of Persia game (I know I’m a nerd).
Also it looks really nice, still believable natural looking lashes. No smudges, despite it’s not a waterproof mascara.
Unfortunately though, it’s flakey. No smudges but flakey. Not good when you’re wearing contacts.
Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill
This one was pegged to me once as *THE* mascara to beat. I like the look and weight of the bottle, but wasn’t sure if it holds true to the claim.
Comparing it with others, however, made me see that this does make my eyelashes look legit but not fake. The only downside is that it smudges on me. Very much no no to wear on warm days!
The residue is also okay. Just the right amount deposited on the eyelashes!
Which one is my favorite mascaras and primers for Asian lashes?
I absolutely love theDiorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum, hands down. It’s pricey but I don’t mind buying it again (note to self: get one in the dutyfree). Also it makes any mascara looks better and somehow it managed to keep them intact (even during dance classes).
As for the mascara, I am still unsure. I think Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill is a good all-rounder mascara although I wish NARS Audacious would be less flakey. I do like the Maybelline Lash Sensational (Waterproof) a lot. But I think my quest for the holy grail mascara still continues!
