Imagine, a moisturising spray without any alcohol or perfume that has a SPF 30 that you can apply OVER your makeup. Yes, indeed, over makeup, so making it ideal for days when you wear a full face of makeup and can’t re-apply sunscreen without making a big ol’ mess about it or risk insufficient protection. And if you find yourself a bit shiny, or your eyeshadow smeared a bit in the heat, you can actually re-apply your makeup of choice over it. A dream, you say? NO! It’s Bioderma Hydrabio Eau de Soin SPF 30 (UVA and UVB protection).

Bioderma launched it this summer, and there was a lot tearing of hairs worldwide because at the moment it’s just available in France. (But don’t panic yet, I’ll tell you how you can get yours at the end of this post!)

Ingredients

I managed to get my hands on it, and tested it during the last heat wave over some different bases. It’s an aerosol spray in a small can (50ml) that you can easily carry around in your handbag. Bioderma calls it a ‘Moisturizing anti-UV mist’. It’s a water-based formula.

Application

As a base, I always used moisturiser plus additional sunscreen (either Skinceuticals Brightening UV Defense SPF30, or Skinceuticals Mineral Radiance UV Defense SPF50). I then applied my foundation. After about three hours, I applied the spray over it.

One pump of Bioderma Hydrabio Eau de Soin on my hand. I didn't spray with the required 20cm distance, so that's why it's a blob of liquid - just wanted to show the texture!

The spray isn’t as fine as a thermal water spray, but it isn’t splotchy. You need to press the pump several times to mist your whole face. Texture-wise, it feels a bit like MAC’s Fix+ spray.

It doesn’t matter though if you get a bit of spray on your clothes, because miraculously it doesn’t stain them. On my face, it sunk in slowly, resulting in a moisturised feeling and a glowy look. It doesn’t leave a white cast at all.

I rubbed it in a bit so you can see the effect and glow on the skin.

After a while I used some blotting paper to minimise the shine (it IS moisturising indeed and I’ve got combo skin) and powdered over it. Even if Bioderma claims you can re-apply makeup and foundation, I’d be very careful with powder application afterwards. Use the lightest and most translucent setting powder available if you absolutely have to. You can also blot and powder before you actually apply the Bioderma Eau de Soin to minimise the glow.

The spray doesn’t feel like sunscreen on my face at all (it smells of sunscreen though – in a nice and not overwhelming way). It actually feels like a liquid foundation that I didn’t set with powder – you can feel that there’s something on your face when you touch it. There’s a definite glow to my face after using it, but it doesn’t look oily, and makeup doesn’t slide off my face either.

Some warning notes: Try not to get it on your hair (which may be difficult), because this results in a very crunchy texture of the hair around your face, although the scrunchiness disappears after a bit. Also don’t get it on your jewellery like earrings because those will develop a sunscreen patina. Not good.

How does it perform?

Over liquid foundation

This yielded the best results for me. I used my DIY Crema Nuda foundation over Skinceuticals Brightening UV Defense and some setting powder. When I applied the Hydrabio Eau de Soin I couldn’t detect any difference in how my foundation (and whole made-up face) looked. I also tried it over Bourjois CC Cream with the same great results.

Over mineral (powder) foundation

MAC’s Mineral Foundation Loose over Skinceuticals Mineral Radiance is my go-to foundation for very hot days, and the first time I tried Bioderma Eau de Soin over it, results weren’t pretty. Maybe the reason for that was that I used a pressed powder over it later (Nars Reflecting Setting powder), but it ended looking like a cakey mess. The second time I tried it, I didn’t powder after application, and it was fine. So, either blot and powder BEFORE you spray Eau de Soin, or embrace the glow. But don’t use another layer of powder over it when your foundation is a powder foundation.

Over powder

Quick and easy! I used my Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Powder over Skinceuticals Brightening UV Defense and went about my business. After a few hours, I blotted, re-applied the powder and applied Eau de Soin. Great! Not cakey or splotchy, but a very nice natural glow and look for quick makeup days.

How I like it and how to get it

I love this product for its formula. Of course, there’re setting sprays with SPF out there, but they all have a high alcohol and perfume content that I really don’t want to put on my face – both ingredients are irritants that I try to avoid. Instead, Bioderma Eau de Soin actually has quite good ingredients like Niaciamide and Tocopherol (in low quantities, granted, but still).

My skin didn’t react to it, and I like the convenience of it. I think that the spray could be finer, but it doesn’t spray annoyingly big drops either.

I love how it looks either over liquid foundation or powder. If you’re not into the glowy look for summer you’ll possibly not like the look of it. You can, though, also use it on a completely naked face as well and pat it gently into the skin with your hands. Very convenient for days at the pool or at the beach.

And, most importantly, it helps your skin looking younger because you don’t have to skimp on sunscreen application just because you’re wearing makeup. Because it’s a spray I guess that you shouldn’t use it for your main UV protection because you’d have to apply a lot to reach sufficient protection. But as a protection boost there’s absolutely nothing that’s not to like. I hope that Bioderma makes this available in countries other than France.

You can get the Bioderma spray at some French online pharmacy like Powersante, Easypharmacie and Europara for about 7 to 10 Euros. If you’re in Europe, chances are quite good that they’ll send it to you.
