twindly: Was ist Dein Alltags-Look?

twindly: Was bedeutet Schönheit für Dich?

ENGLISH VERSION

While working on twindly, we’ve met a lot of fascinating people from the beauty industry. What’s better, after all, than sitting around a table and chatting about beauty? We’d love to do that with all of you reading this! But alas, because that’s quite impossible, we’ve started this interview series in which we’ll ask insiders like MUAs, small business founders and influencers how they perceive beauty and ask them to share their best tips and tricks with us all. So, grab a chair and a coffee and come and join us!

Sophie, the startup founder with a penchant for nails.

Born and raised in Berlin, 24 years-old Sophie Kuehn is a true cosmopolitan. After living and studying in New York City and Montpellier (France), she made Berlin her headquarters from where she sells her Miss Sophie’s Nail Wraps, a startup she founded, in 2014. Simply sophisticated – that’s the motto the founder of Miss Sophie’s, who always carries a nail file in her handbag, follows in all things beauty.

twindly: When did you get really into beauty?

Sophie: I was already fascinated by makeup as a child, even though I wasn’t sure how to apply it correctly! My first experience with nail polish was at the age of five when I applied my mom’s Tipp-Ex fluid (note: it’s a white liquid correction fluid with a brush) to my nails and proudly presented the design to her. Nowadays I absolutely love doing any kind of research on everything connected with beauty, especially since launching my own startup.

twindly: What inspired you to start your own business?

Sophie: I got the idea of Miss Sophie’s during my studies abroad in Southern France. My friends and I spent days on the beach. Nail polish really didn’t stand a chance in the sand and in the sea water. On all of us even the most expensive polish chipped really quickly. I consequentially started to research and developed the nail wraps, which I tested and improved until I liked the quality. Problem solved: Our innovative nail wraps last longer than nail polish and their stylish designs would take much longer if you’d want to paint them on your nails!

What was the best beauty advice you ever got?

Sophie: One of my friends told me once to wear a bright and colorful lipstick when you’re having a bad hair day or tired skin and eyes. The bright color will distract from that and makes you look alive and active!

How long does it usually take for you to do your makeup?

Sophie: Usually no longer than 15 minutes. To compliment my makeup, I always make sure I have well-tended nails and hands. This is why I love wearing Miss Sophie’s Nail Wraps, because they’re really long lasting and jazz up every outfit – and it doesn’t take long to apply them! I want my hands always to look good in my line of job, so I’m always carrying a tube of Miracle Balm by Rituals in my handbag (and a nail file for emergencies). The Balm is incredibly rich and soothing – I don’t need any nail oil or other treatments when I use it. I’m doing the hand peeling from the same series once or twice a week and can really recommend it!

Where do you get your inspiration for your makeup looks, and while we’re at it, what are your fave beauty sites on the net?

Sophie: I love reading women’s and lifestyle magazines to watch current trends. Online I follow a lot of fashion and beauty blogs where I get inspired. One of my favorites is Stylebook. On youtube I love the girls from teetharejade and are always looking forward to their new beauty vids!

What is your everyday look? (Share a pic? Please?)

Sophie: I don’t wear much makeup during the day. A BB cream by Smashbox, a bit of powder, the awesome Bronzing Powder by IsaDora on my cheekbones for a healthy glow in winter. For my eyes , I start with a primer, followed by a bright violet eye shadow all over the lid and a darker brown in the crease. I finish by applying mascara (Benefit Beyond Mascara) and done! If I go out in the evening, I spice my look up by adding a lot of black liner (Benefit They’re Real) and one of my growing collection of Mac lipsticks. For a vampy look I’ll reach for Russian Red or Rebel.

Tell us some of your beauty holy grails – what would you never want to be without?

Sophie: I am absolutely crazy about my MAC lipstick in Rebel – it’s a dark, berry purple with a satin finish that always looks classy and elegant. I love combining it with Miss Sophie’s Black Marble Nail Wraps, because their black base colour and the berry lips are so good together!

What does beauty mean to you?

Sophie: To me beauty is an individual combination from a person’s inner values and outward appearances. Beauty doesn’t only mean looking flawless, but to unite a genuine personality, contentment and happiness. When a person gives me a big smile they’re automatically more beautiful to me than someone who looks dour and doesn’t enjoy life. The great thing about makeup is that you can try out different things and change into somebody new.
